ABOUT CAMPING4WORDS:
Poetry/Camping Program – First cycle to begin Summer 2017
“Camping4Words is a newly formed nonprofit organization aimed at empowering inner city kids ages 14-19 through environmental education and Poetry workshops designed to help our young people find their voice and realize the healing powers of nature and the written word.
NYC has many hidden treasures, natural sites that go unnoticed. Gateway National Recreation Area’s Floyd Bennett Field is one of them; located a few steps from Jamaica Bay and will serve as one of our camping sites. Along with Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island and Croton Point in Westchester County.
Our camping trips include intensive poetry and reading workshops designed to engage students in positive self-expression. Writing prompts will be given to encourage thought to flow and translate unto paper. They will learn the different genres of poetry; epic, lyric, narrative, satirical, and prose. Students will read a variety of poetic works ranging from Sylvia Plath to Piri Thomas.
Each poetry workshop will be facilitated by established NYC poets willing to donate their time and talent to aid with our young people.
Environmental Program
Camping4Words believes that a connection to our natural world brings forth compassion and a sense of unity with all living things. Our program offers young people a variety of ways to engage, hands on, with the environment from volunteering in local community gardens to sailing along the Hudson while learning about our river’s ecosystem. In collaboration with organizations like New York Cares and Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, we aim to bring environmental awareness to our younger generation.
