ABOUT THE PLAY, IN DEFENSE OF GLITTER AND RAINBOWS:

Director Leslie “ButtaFlySoul” Taylor explains, “A person’s soul is shaped through falling and getting back up. “In Defense of Glitter and Rainbows” allows us to see the soul’s journey.” The play examines the world of mothers and daughters with poetry, dance, and storytelling underscored by the haunting melodic singing of Billie Holiday, an authentic voice of the Woman of Color struggle.

The play opens with the spirit of Womanhood sharing her ancient wisdom with the audience, repeating, “Dear girl,” a phrase targeting the primary receptor of her message. Viviann “True” Rodriguez introduces most female characters hinting upon each dynamic and synonymous, but resolutely different, relationship of the mother-to-daughter bloodline. With several generations represented in work, Rodriguez gives each character particular nuances that differentiate and establish the characters’ personalities while remaining connected with a clear indication of familial bond.”

“New York, New York — The mother-daughter relationship is readily explored in the premiering theatrical play, “In Defense of Glitter and Rainbows,” written by debuting Playwright Viviann “True” Rodriguez. With an over-saturation of male and female relationships in the theatre, Rodriguez wanted to flesh out the foundation of a female-female connection, especially in Women of color. The origin of most female connections is the mother-daughter link, and there is hardly a stronger bond, understanding, or basis.
