May 4, 2015: Award-winning Poet, Author, and now debuting Playwright, Viviann “True” Rodriguez teams up with award-winning Director Leslie “ButtaFlySoul” Taylor to bring to you “In Defense of Glitter and Rainbows”A Theatrical Play Celebrating the Dynamics of Womanhood and Life, just in time for Mother’s Day – May 9, 2015, 6:30 pm at the legendary NuyoRican Poets’ Café in Manhattan.

ABOUT THE WRITER OF IN DEFENSE OF GLITTER AND RAINBOWS – VIVIANN “TRUE” RODRIGUEZ:

“I was inspired to write “In Defense of Glitter and Rainbows” while writing a series of poems called “Dear Girl” and spending time with my daughter,” states Viviann “True” Rodriguez. “Many of the shows on television show women putting each other down while displaying a separateness that tears away at the fabric of sisterhood. In writing “In Defense of Glitter and Rainbows,” I am fighting to show that Women are, in fact, loving of each other.
That how we treat each other is passed down from generation to generation and that with the foundation laid by those Women who forged the path, there is no obstacle we cannot overcome and conquer.”

“Dear Girl, our library is full of books written by broken hearts, but those are not your stories.”

Director Leslie “ButtaFlySoul” Taylor explains, “The soul of a person is shaped through falling and getting back up. “In Defense of Glitter and Rainbows” allows us to see the soul’s journey.” The Play examines the world of mothers and daughters with poetry, dance, and storytelling underscored by the haunting melodic singing of Billie Holiday, a true voice of the Woman of Color struggle.

The Play opens with the spirit of Womanhood sharing her ancient wisdom with the audience, repeating, “Dear girl,” a phrase targeting the main receptor of her message. Viviann “True” Rodriguez introduces the majority of female characters hinting upon each dynamic and synonymous, but resolutely different, relationship of the mother-to-daughter bloodline. With several generations represented in the work, Rodriguez manages to give each character special nuances that differentiate and establish the characters’ personalities while remaining connected with a clear indication of familial bond.”
