POETRY-LOVERS! Great Weather for MEDIA, La Sopa NYC, Yes, Poetry, and Brooklyn Poets @ The 6th Annual New York City Poetry Festival on Governor’s Island is going to be one of the HOTTEST POETRY EVENTS of the SUMMER for poets and poetry-lovers to enjoy – Saturday and Sunday, July 30th and 31st, 2016 from 11:00am to 5:00pm; with 75 organizations and 250 poets expected to hit the stages. Plus, there will be an OPEN MIC for those of you with a poem in your pocket! At this FREE, two-day poetry celebration in NYC – among the many poets and spoken word poetry organizations at the festival – will be a few spoken word poetry favorites of Spoken Word New York: Thomas Fucaloro and Corrina Bain.

The festival headliners, Jericho Brown, Camille Rankine, and Matthew Yeager will read on Sunday, July 31st at 4pm on the White Horse stage for The Poetry Society of New York. For you open mic-ers, The Ring of Daisies Open Mic will be running both days.

So like our motto says: Read. Write. Get out & Recite. EnJOY Poetry!

It will be wonderful to see all of the poets and art/poetry organizations out there: doing their individual thing while working together (supporting one another as creators of ART) to build bridges – keeping unity in the community – representing their love of ART through their heART, to keep ART alive and growing for their supporters; for the people — for the ART and POETRY-LOVERS.

ABOUT #‎LaSopaNYC:
La Sopa NYC is the workshop series born of the Capicu Culture and Acentos Poetry Workshop families commitment to the traditions of the Black Arts, The Beats and The Nuyorican Movements, in that poetry is a conduit of personal self actualization and a means of proliferating social justice. The peoples’ voices must be heard, the stories that we tell are our cultural lifeblood.

ABOUT BROOKLYN POETS:
Brooklyn Poets is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization celebrating and cultivating the poets, poetry and literary heritage of Brooklyn, the birthplace of American poetry.

That’s right, birthplace. If you believe, as we do, that with the publication of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass in 1855, American poetry was born, then Brooklyn, where that book was published by the Rome Brothers print shop on Old Fulton St, is where that took place.

Over the years, Brooklyn has served as home to and inspired some of the most original and influential poets on the world stage, from Whitman, Hart Crane and Marianne Moore in the American tradition to expatriate masters such as W. H. Auden and Joseph Brodsky; visiting visionaries such as Vladimir Mayakovsky and Federico García Lorca; and hip-hop pioneers such as Big Daddy Kane, MCA, Guru, Biggie Smalls, GZA, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Jay Z.

From Walt Whitman to Jay Z, Brooklyn, we go hard.
