“Smokin’ Word & Drum Open Mic Series” features poets, musicians, and artists of all walks of life, whose art carries a message for the people. The ELKAT team collaborates with each featured artist to create a unique production for the showcased artist, setting a different tone from month-to-month.

This month, “Smokin’ Word & Drum Open Mic” features the phenomenal actor, artist, poet David “D-Black” Roberts!
ABOUT THE FEATURE:

D-BLACK is a Bronx-native who has been writing and performing poetry for a number of years. Being a direct descendant of an African mother (Sierra Leone to be exact) and being born and raised in African-American surroundings has helped D-BLACK to look at his culture from “both sides of the fence”. With this background, as well as his love & experience for acting, D-BLACK has done his best to feed others with his verbal food for thought. By blending his social/psychological awareness with his urban/Afro-centric flavor he tries his best to express issues that promote Black awareness and unity.

He has been doing so, successfully, at such venues as: The Apollo Theater, NJPAC (New Jersey Performing Arts Center), the African Burial Grounds, Nuyorican Poets’ Café, Urban Juke Joint, Barnes & Noble’s, MOCA’s in Harlem, the Knitting Factory, the Bowery Poets Café, and various “Spoken Word Showcases” hosted by Hottest Poets, Inc. and For the Love of Poetry. He has been named a Regional Grand Slam Spoken Word Champion for The Great Debaters Slam 2007, Nubian Heritage Slam 2007, and an opening–act for Phyllis Yvonne-Stickney at Symphony Space in Harlem. He is also the three-time winner of the Manhattan Monologue Slam for August ’08 – November ’08 (www.mmslam.com) and finalist of the Star Project Competition for ABFF 2013 (www.abff.com).

Get to El Fogon Center for the Arts (in the Bronx) to see the multi-talented actor, artist, poet D-Black! And to enJOY the artistic ambiance of LIVE! poetry, music, culture & ART!
