“Smokin’ Word & Drum Open Mic,” hosted by ELKAT Productions with Machete Movement is LIVE! EVERY LAST SATURDAY of every month at El Fogon Center for the Arts in the Bronx.
This month, Saturday, August 29, 2015, at 7:00pm, “Smokin’ Word & Drum Open Mic Series” features Full Circle Ensemble NYC members – Poets, Vanessa Chica and Danny Matos.
“Smokin’ Word & Drum Open Mic Series” features poets, musicians, and artists of all walks of life, whose art carries a message for the people. The ELKAT team collaborates with each featured artist to create a unique production for the showcased artist, setting a different tone from month-to-month.

ABOUT THE FEATURES:
Vanessa CHICA
Vanessa Chica is a New York City poet. She is a lover and supporter of all things creative. She made the terrifying, yet liberating, decision to share her poetry while on vacation in the summer of 2013 at The Poets Passage in San Juan P.R. This decision led to a whirlwind of words and creative endeavors.
You can find Vanessa Chica making her voice felt and heard at various venues across New York City, some of these include: The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Capicu Cultural Showcase, The Dojo, Babble in the Bronx and Word@4F.
She is a member of Machete Movement, a world music band featuring percussion and spoken word. She previously held a production assistant position for Soledad Speaks (a Spoken Word Production produced and directed by Linda Nieves Powell).
Vanessa Chica is currently the assistant director and member of The Sunday Writing Circle (a weekly writing group), an alumna of #LaSopa (The School of Poetic Arts), Marketing Director for ELKAT Productions and Tantalizing Productions, as well as Co-Founder of The Full Circle Ensemble.
DANNY MATOS
Danny Matos is a graduate of St. John’s University. He is an Emcee, Spoken Word Artist, and Poet in New York City, where he was born and raised. He believes words and expression give us all a purpose bigger than ourselves, and they foster one of humanity’s most precious needs – a sense of genuine connection to ourselves, each other, and the world at large.
He writes to connect with people and to create awareness on many subjects that both contribute and are important to our shared human experience. He has featured, performed, and conducted writing workshops at a myriad of venues and schools throughout New York and the surrounding areas. He is the winner of the 2013 Poetry Idol Competition, Winner of the 2013 Inspired Word Grand Master Slam, and a 2014 finalist and runner-up for the Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe’s Annual Grand Slam.
He is the author of his self-published book entitled “Scratching the Surface.” He also just released his first Hip Hop album entitled “Nothing Without You.”
His motto: “Sense Is Cash. Don’t Die Broke.”
