My love of theatre was ignited during a school trip to see Cats on Broadway. I was so intrigued by how we were transported to this new world, filled with Cats wandering around the audience, the line between cast and audience blurred.
I was fortunate enough to attend many plays after that. The most influential being Celia. Here was a play about one of my she-roes, written in Spanglish, filled with the music my grandmother blasted on the radio while cleaning. I was home, but I was still looking for a story that matched my own. One that I could relate to that didn’t have a famous central character. A play that would speak directly to the girl in me, written by someone like me, for someone like me.
After years of searching, of wishing, of disappointment and a little anger, I decided to write it myself. And so “In Defense of Glitter and Rainbows” was born.”

{Review} “New York, New York — The mother-daughter relationship is readily explored in the premiering theatrical play, “In Defense of Glitter and Rainbows,” written by debuting Playwright Viviann True Rodriguez. With an over-saturation of male and female relationships in the theatre, Rodriguez, wanted to flesh out the foundation of a female-female connection, especially in Women of color. The origin of most female connections is the mother-daughter link and there is hardly a stronger bond, understanding, or basis.”
