What does ELKAT Productions do for the Arts? And who or what is this Machete Movement Spoken Word New York keeps hearing so much about on the scene? Let’s find out.
ELKAT Productions is an artist production company creating and promoting the ART that stays true to what moves the heart and soul. ELKAT Productions was founded by El David: a seasoned Spoken Word Artist, percussionist, music producer, vocalist, visual artist and community activist and Katalina: an attorney, musician, writer and community advocate.
ELKAT Productions was created to form a unique platform for artists and musicians to showcase their vision and share their message to the community. El and Kat have been deeply influenced by the ARTS, whether it is the hip-hop culture from their respective hometowns of New York and Chicago, Yoruba chants or the sounds of their Latino roots. They utilize the spirit of that culture to promote the message found in each of their projects. “Music and ART are vehicles needed to depict the stories of troubles and triumphs experienced by our community.”
ELKAT Productions prides itself on supporting artists whose works are genuine and incite a dialogue, because it is that dialogue that ultimately creates change.
July 2014, ELKAT Productions launched a monthly Open Mic series called “Smokin’ Word & Drum”, held on the LAST SATURDAY OF EACH MONTH at El Fogon Center for the Arts (989 Home Street, Bronx, NY). Playing host and house band for “Smokin’ Word & Drum,” Machete Movement (a world music band that combines Afro-Latino roots drumming and features spoken word with Yoruba chants) provides an original lyrical and musical pairing throughout the evening, further adding to the vibe of this eclectic Open Mic.
“Smokin Word & Drum Open Mic” features poets, musicians, and artists of all walks of life, whose art carries a message for the people. The ELKAT team collaborates with each featured artist to create a unique production for the showcased artist, setting a different tone from month-to-month.
