ABOUT THE PERFORMER:
ANDRES “CHULISI” RODRIGUEZ is a native New Yorker. He was born and raised in Brooklyn. In his teens he joined local talent contests where he sang and danced. He choreographed for a few freestyle singers and went on to record his own dance music single on “Strictly Rhythm.” He attended Julia Richman High School, and enrolled in the Talented Unlimited program taking musical theater. It was there he learned about voice and acting. During his high school years he danced backup for many freestyle singers of the time. It wasn’t long after that, that he took to the stage. He has done “Off To See The Mayor,”“Life As A Drag,” and “Bangee,” just to name a few of the many shows he has performed in. The roles he played were various characters from a drag queen to a comic.
“Chulisi” toured his critically acclaimed one-man show called “Making Of A Wo-man.” He took a break for a year and started writing poetry. He decided to put his writing to the test by creating, producing and directing a group of actors. That is how the Lose Control comedy troupe was created. (All videos can be seen on YouTube under losecontroltv) They had a 5-year contract at the Broadway Comedy Club. In-between all of what he works on for himself, he also works with many actors on technique, improvisation-work and character-development.
Andres “Chulisi” Rodriguez’s poetry can be found in “Mariposas – A Collection of Latino Poets” by Floricanto Press. In 2012 he received an HOLA award for Best Male Solo Performance and nominated for an Audelco award for playing the role of two brothers in “Growing Up Gonzalez.” And since the start of Cycle 3, he has been a member of The Full Circle Ensemble and theatrical-director of both of The Full Circle Ensemble’s productions, “From The Page To The Stage” and “Misconceptions.” Both of which were performed at the legendary National Black Theatre.
