ATTENTION: SPOKEN WORD POETRY LOVERS/FANS OF SMOKIN’ WORD! Friday, September 16, 2016, ELKAT Productions says farewell to Smokin’ Word Open Mic Series @ The South of France. On this very special night, Smokin’ Word Open Mic will be featuring the spoken word, poetic talents of Carlos Manuel Rivera and Cesilie Anandi. And as special guest, hear the drumming rhythms of poet, author, drummer, Axel Garcia. Plan to spend your Friday the 16th with your family and friends at Smokin’ Word. Come out to be a part of this legendary last show.
After two years of creating a platform that spotlighted some of the greats in NYC arts; contributing to artists breaking from their shell, finding their voice, and using their voice to share in their truths, Smokin’ Word Open Mic Series will be coming to an end to focus on their greatest creation – the blessing that is their family. But do not fret! Whether it’s through their Smokin’ Word Online; music production and book publishing via ELKAT Productions; BOMBA nights at The South of France; contributing to the success of shows in the NYC spoken word poetry community; collaborating with other artists; or featuring their own powerhouse poetry at a venue — you’ll see EL and KAT always involved in the arts in some way.
July 2014, ELKAT Productions launched a monthly Open Mic series called Smokin’ Word & Drum, held on the LAST SATURDAY OF EACH MONTH at El Fogon Center for the Arts (989 Home Street, Bronx, NY). Playing host and house band for Smokin’ Word & Drum, Machete Movement (a world music band that combines Afro-Latino roots drumming and features spoken word with Yoruba chants) provided an original lyrical and musical pairing throughout the evening, further adding to the vibe of this eclectic Open Mic.
In 2015, Smokin’ Word & Drum became Smokin’ Word and found a new home at The South of France – continuing to keep the arts in the BronX. Smokin’ Word Open Mic featured poets, musicians, and artists of all walks of life, whose art carries a message for the people. The ELKAT team collaborated with each featured artist to create a unique production for the showcased artist, setting a different tone from month-to-month.
